The contemporary workshop which was held yesterday, Sunday 24th June was a huge success thanks to the fabulous guest teacher, Maria Ryan.

It was a Cunningham based class with plenty of fun and challenging movements and steps which some hadn’t tried out before due to their ballet background. It was really refreshing to try out a new style of dance and to work with the body in a less structured way allowing free movement to flow. We were blessed with ‘Jo the drummer’ who was our percussionist for the workshop who was fabulous.

Well done to all who participated, I plan on doing more so do let me know if you are keen to come along to my next one.

I also plan to offer a workshop suitable for girls age 10 – 14 yrs as GCSE dance in secondary schools is proving more and more popular these days so this is a good introduction for pupils.

Maria Ryan

Guest Teacher

A brief bigraphy of Maria Ryan Below who will be my guest teacher for this exciting workshop:

Maria Ryan trained at the London Contemporary Dance School and performed with their graduate performance company in 1994-1995 (which was called 4D and is now EDGE). She was a professional dance artist for 9 years, performing and teaching with contemporary choreographers and companies including Yael Flexer, Hénri Oguike & Phoenix Dance Company. During this time Maria also worked with choreographers such as Richard Alston, Mark Baldwin, Jonzi D and Siobhan Davies.

She taught contemporary technique on the Centre for Advanced Training programme at Swindon Dance and made the transition to project management working with Independent Dance, Swindon Dance and then as Children & Youth Dance Manager at The Place from 2011-2017.
